上片从“去年元夜时”说起，“花市”既指卖花赏花的集市，也指元宵佳节处处花团锦簇，入夜大街小巷“竞陈灯烛，光彩争华，直至达旦”。词人并不是要写元宵的盛况，而是要烘托情侣约会的氛围，以引出即将出场的主角：“月上柳梢头，人约黄昏后。”“花市灯如昼”不过是点缀背景，“黄昏后”的朦胧之时，“柳梢头”的幽静之地，才是约会的好去处，因而光线由明而暗，环境由喧而幽。“人约黄昏后”点到为止，留给我们无穷的遐想：他们一见面是深情相拥，还是倾诉衷肠？是两人独处，还是随人观灯？花市、彩灯、明月、柳梢，热闹而又幽静，喜气而又温馨，爱情甜蜜得令人心醉。
